Highlight in 2009

 

Younan Xia was ranked No. 5  by Times Higher Education on their list of Top Ten Chemists of the Decade (1999-2009), based on the citation data released by the Thomson Reuters’ Essential Science Indicators.

 

Younan Xia was featured in the Washington University in St. Louis Magazine (winter 2009), in an article entitled "Visions of Promise".

 

Unyong Jeong, a former postdoctoral fellow of the Xia group, was recently promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea.

 

Yadong Yin (Chemistry, UC Riverside), a former student of the Xia group (Ph.D., 2002), and Sara Skrabalak (Chemistry, Indiana U.), a former postdoctoral fellow of the Xia group, were both selected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to receive the CAREER Award.

 

Our work on a novel system for controlled release ("Gold nanocages covered by smart polymers for controlled release with near-infrared light", Yavuz, M. S.; Cheng, Y.; Chen, J.; Cobley, C. M.; Zhang, Q.; Xie, J.; Kim, C. H.; Song, K. H.; Schwartz, A. G.; Wang, L. V. and Xia, Y. Nature Materials 2009, 12, 935-939) was highlighted in New York Times (November 3, 2009), Pharmaceutical Formulations & Quality (November 24, 2009), and Biophotonics (January, 2010).

 

Claire Cobley, a 4th year Ph.D. student in the Xia group, was selected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the famous Lindau Meeting of Nobel Laureates.

 

Younan Xia was appointed as a World Class University (WCU) Professor in Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, 9/2009-8/2014.

 

Our work on silver nanocrystal synthesis ("Etching and growth: An intertwined pathway to silver nanocrystals with exotic shapes", Cobley, C. M.; Rycenga, M.; Zou, F.; Li, Z.-Y. and Xia, Y. Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2009, 48, 4824-4827) was highlighted in Nature, 2009, 459, p. 893.

 

Pedro Camargo passed his final exam (thesis defense) and became the 13th Ph.D. from the Xia group on August 27. He is currently working as a postdoctoral fellow in his home country, Brazil.

 

Leslie Au passed her final exam (thesis defense) and became the 12th Ph.D. from the Xia group on August 21. She is currently a staff scientist at Oceanit in Hawaii.

 

Our work on a new catalyst for the fuel cell technology ("Pd-Pt bimetallic nanodendrites with high activity for oxygen reduction", Lim, B.; Jiang, M.; Camargo, P. H. C.; Cho, E. C.; Tao, J.; Lu, X.; Zhu, Y. and Xia, Y. Science 2009, 324, 1302-1305 was highlighted in a number of magazines, including C&EN News, Science News, Nano Today, Chemistry World, Earth, and AIChE.

 

Our work on neural tissue engineering with electrospun nanofibers ("Neurite outgrowth on nanofiber scaffolds with different orders, structures, and surface properties", Xie, J.; MacEwan, M. R.; Li, X.; Sakiyama-Elbert, S. E. and Xia, Y. ACS Nano 2009, 3, 1151-1159) was highlighted on the cover.

Mustafa Selman Yavuz, a former postdoctoral fellow of the Xia group, started in August as an Assistant Professor in the NanoMedicine and Advanced Technologies Center at Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey.

 

Benjamin Wiley, a former student of the Xia group (Ph.D., 2006), started in July as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Duke University.

 

Younan Xia was selected as the first "Next Power Chair" in the Department of Chemical Engineering at National Tsing Hua University (Taiwan). He visited Taiwan in May 2009 to deliver a series of lectures.

 

Eric Formo passed his final exam (thesis defense) and became the 11th Ph.D. from the Xia group on April 1. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

 

Weiyang Li, a 3rd year Ph.D. student in the Xia group, received the Graduate Student Presentation Award at the Materials Research Society (MRS) spring national meeting held in San Francisco.

 

Younan Xia was selected as a Fellow of the Materials Research Society (MRS).
