Highlight in 2007

Younan Xia is currently ranked the 2nd most cited scientist in the field of materials science in the ISI database, for details, please visit http://in-cites.com/top/2007/fourth07-mat-sci.html.

Our review article with Peidong Yang's group on one-dimensional nanostructures (Younan Xia, Peidong Yang, Yugang Sun, Yiying Wu, Brian Mayers, Byron Gates, Yadong Yin, Frank Kim and Haoquan Yan, Advanced Materials, 2003, 15, 353-389) was selected as the ISI Current Classic in Materials Science for December 2007. This article has received >1700 citations, and had the greatest absolute increase in citations of all materials science papers, see http://www.in-cites.com/currentclassics/december2007.html).

Our work on the use gold nanocages as contrast agents for photoacoustic tomography (Xinmai Yang, Sara Skrabalak, Zhi-Yuan Li, Younan Xia, and Lihong Wang, Nano Letters 2007, 7, 3798-3702) was highlighted in Nature Photonics, January 2008, p. 7.

The Xia group relocated from the University of Washington in Seattle to Washington University in St. Louis over the summer.

Jesse McCann passed his final exam on July 24th and became the eighth Ph.D. of the Xia group. He embarked on his journey to pursue an M.D. degree at the Albert Einstein College in New York City.

Benjamin Wiley passed his final exam on June 9th and became the seventh Ph.D. of the Xia group.  He is now a postdoctoral fellow in Professor George M. Whitesides group at Harvard University.

Joseph McLellan passed his final exam on April 6th and became the sixth Ph.D. of the Xia group.  He now works as a research scientist at Nano-Terra in the Boston area.

Our work on photothermal cancer treatment using immuno gold nanocage (Jingyi Chen, Danling Wang, Jiefeng Xi, Leslie Au, Andy Siekkinen, Addie Warsen, Zhi-Yuan Li, Hui Zhang, Younan Xia and Xingde Li, Nano Letters, 2007, 7, 1318-1322) was highlighted on the Nanotechweb.org, May 6th, 2007, under the title "Nanocages feel the heat".

Our work on the synthesis and optical characterization of silver nanobars and nanorice (Benjamin Wiley, Yeechi Chen, Joseph McLellan, Yujie Xiong, Zhi-Yuan Li, David Ginger, and Younan Xia, Nano Letters, 2007, 7, 1032-1036) was highlighted in Photonics Spectra (May, 2007) under the title "Silver nanostructures with unique optical properties created".

Our work on the dependence of SERS activity of a supported Ag nanocube on laser polarization (Joseph McLellan, Andy Siekkinen and Younan Xia, Nano Letters, 2007, 7, 1013-1017) was highlight as Editor's Choice in Science, 2007, Vol. 316, p.20.

Our work on the synthesis of hexathiapentacene (HTP) single-crystal nanowires and fabrication of field-effect transistors (Alejandro Briseno, Stefan Mannsfeld, Xianmao Lu, Yujie Xiong, Samson Jenekhe, Zhenan Bao and Younan Xia, Nano Letters, 2007, 7, 668-675 was highlighted in Nano Today, 2007, Vol. 2, P. 9.

Our feature article on the synthesis of one-dimensional nanowires of metals (Jingyi Chen, Ben Wiley and Younan Xia, Langmuir, 2007, 23, 4120-4129) was featured on the cover.

Alejandro Briseno has won three awards this year:

1. Excellence in Graduate Polymer Science Research Award - ACS Chicago (2007).

2. 2007 MRS Graduate Student Silver Award.

3. 2007 Best Poster Award at the Materials and Devices for Information Technology Research (CMDITR) Retreat and Expo.
