Younan Xia was born in Jingjiang, Jiangsu, China. Dr. Xia received his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from Harvard University (with Professor George M. Whitesides) in 1996, his M.S. degree in inorganic chemistry from University of Pennsylvania (with the late Professor Alan G. MacDiarmid) in 1993, and his B.S. degree in chemical physics from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1987.

Lori Williams was born in Oceanside, California and grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. She received her B.A. degree in public relations from Webster University in 2006. In the fall of 2007, she began working as the Administrative Assistant for the Xia group.

Claire Cobley was born in Montreal, Canada and grew up in Cary, North Carolina. She graduated in 2006 from Brown University where she received a B.S. in chemistry and an Undergraduate Teaching and Research Award (UTRA). She was awarded an Early Bird Award to get involved in nanotechnology research during her first year. As the fifth year graduate student, her research interests include the synthesis, analysis, and applications of metal nanostructures.

Eun Chul Cho was born in Seoul, South Korea. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from Pohang University of Science and Technology in 2004, he worked for Amorepacific Corporation, a cosmetic company, until 2007. He joined the  Xia group as a postdoctoral follow in the spring of 2008. His research interests include synthesis of  colloidal nanocrystals and their applications in biomedical research and cosmetics.

Yunqian Dai was born in Sichuan, China. She received her B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Southeast University in 2006. She is pursuing her Ph.D degree (with Prof. Yueming Sun) in the school of chemistry and chemical engineering at Southeast University. In 2008, she joined the Xia group as a jointly supervised student. Her research interests include synthesis of arrayed nanostructures and applications in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Rui Deng was born in Hubei,China. He received his B.S. and M.S. in chemistry, from Wuhan University in 2003 and 2006, respectively. After receiving his Ph.D. in polymer physics and chemistry from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in the summer of 2010, he joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral fellow. His research interests include the synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials for applications in biomedicine.

Guannan He was born in Shandong, China. She received her B.S. degree (2007) and M.S. degree (2010) in chemistry from Xiamen University. As a first-year graduate student in chemistry, she is currently pursuing her Ph.D. degree in the Xia group. Her research interests include the synthesis and applications of metallic nanomaterials.

Mingshang Jin was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Xiamen University in 2006. He is pursuing his Ph.D. in chemistry at Xiamen University in China. As a jointly supervised student, he joined Prof. Xia's group in the October of 2009. His research interests include shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanostructures such as copper, silver, gold, and nickel, and their applications in areas such as SERS, catalysis, and magnetism.

Doyoub Kim was born and raised in Young-ju, South Korea. He received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Konkuk University in 2007. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. in chemical and biomolecular engineering at KAIST. As a visiting student, Doyoub joined the Xia group in the spring of 2010. His research interests include the synthesis and application of noble-metal nanostructures.

Jing Li was born in Ningxia, China. She received her B.S. degree in chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2010. As a Ph.D. candidate in chemistry, she is working in the Xia group on shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanomaterials and their applications in areas such as surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and biological imaging.

Weiyang Li was born in Tianjin, China. She received her B.S. degree in chemistry in 2004 and M.S. degree in inorganic chemistry from the institute of new energy materials chemistry from Nankai University in 2007.  As a third-year graduate student from BME, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in the Xia group. Her research interest includes synthesis of nanomaterials for optical sensing and development of new contrast agents for optical and radio frequency imaging techniques.

Wenying Liu was born in Jiangxi, China. She received her B.S. degree in biological engineering from School of Chemical Engineering and Technology of Tianjin University in 2009. As a second-year graduate student from EECE, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in the Xia group. Her research interests include the production of electrospun nanofibers and their applications in biomedicine, such as understanding cell-scaffold interaction as well as drug delivery.

Geon Dae Moon was born and raised in Incheon, South Korea. He received his B.S. degree in materials science and engineering from Yonsei University in 2006. He is pursuing his Ph.D. in the same department under the supervision of Prof. Unyong Jeong, a former postdoctoral fellow of the Xia group. He joined the Xia group as a visiting student in March, 2010. His research interests include biomedical applications of nanoparticles such as drug delivery and targeted therapy.

  


Yanyun Ma was born in Shanxi, China and grew up in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China. She received her B. S. degree in chemistry from Xiamen University in 2004. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in chemistry at Xiamen University in China. As a jointly supervised student, Yanyun joined the Xia group in the fall of 2008. Her research interests include shape-controlled synthesis and self-assembly of noble-metal nanostructrues for applications in fields such as catalysis and energy storage.
 

Maureen McKiernan was born in Kansas City, Kansas. She received her B. S. degree in chemistry from Kansas State University in 2008. She is pursuing her Ph. D. in chemistry in the Xia group. Her research interests include the synthesis of novel, metallic nanomaterials and their applications in biological imaging and cancer therapy.

Christine Moran grew up primarily on the East Coast and is most recently from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Rice University with a B.S. in bioengineering in 2009. She is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in the Xia group. Her research interests center around the medical applications of metallic nanoparticles and their use in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Matthew Rycenga was born in Cadillac, Michigan. He graduated from Hope College with a B.S. in chemistry in 2006. As a fifth-year graduate student in BME, he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree in the Xia group. His scientific interests include nanoparticle synthesis, self-assembly, surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and novel biological applications of nanoparticles.

A. Lake Wooten was raised in Kansas City. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2009 with a B.S. in Engineering Physics and a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. His research interests include tissue engineering and cell delivery.

Xiaohu Xia was born in Anhui province, China. He graduated from Xiamen University with a B.S. in biotechnology in 2006. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Qingge Li in department of biomedical science at Xiamen University. As a jointly supervised Ph. D. student, he joined the Xia group in October 2009. His research interests include nanomaterial synthesis, surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and its biological and medical applications.

Jingwei Xie was born in Anhui, China. He received his B.S. (1999), M.S. (2002) from Nanjing University of Technology in 1999 and Ph.D. from National University of Singapore. His doctoral research was focused on the biomedical devices development using electrohydrodynamic atomization. Jingwei joined the group as a postdoctoral fellow in 2007, working on the production of nanostructured materials by electrospinning, with a focus on their biomedical applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery.

Miaoxin Yang was born in Shanghai, China. He received his B.S. in pharmacy from Shanghai Jiaotong University in 2006, and M.S. in Chemistry from Nanyang Technological University in 2009. As a second year graduate student in BME, he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in the Xia group. His research interests include the synthesis, surface modification and applications of noble metal nanostructures in biomedical research.

Yi-Chun Yeh (Misha) was born and grew up in Yunlin, Taiwan. She received her B.S. degree in Textile Engineering from FengChia University in 2003 and M.S. degree in Materials Engineering from TaTung University in 2006. She is now pursuing her Ph.D. degree in National Tsing Hua University with Prof. Hsing-Wen Sung, with research interests in tissue engineering and cell vehicle for myocardial infarction. As a visiting graduate student, she joined the Xia group in October 2009.

Kyunghwan Yoon was born in Pusan, South Korea. After receiving his Ph.D. in chemistry from SUNY at Stony Brook in 2008, he worked in Samsung Electronics (semiconductor research center) until July 2010. He joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral research associate in August, 2010. His research interests include nanofiber fabrication by electrospinning and their applications in catalysis and environmental science.

Taekyung Yu was born in Seoul, South Korea. He received his Ph.D. from school of chemical and biological engineering at Seoul National University in 2008. His doctoral research was focused on the development of synthetic routes to metal oxide nanocrystals by using wet-chemical method. In the summer of 2009, he joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral fellow working on the synthesis of metal nanocrystals for catalytic and fuel cell applications.

Jie Zeng was born in Henan, China. He received a BS in Applied Chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2002. With Professor Jianguo Hou, he obtained his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from USTC in 2008. His doctoral research was focused on the physical and chemical properties of zero-dimensional nanomaterials. Jie joined the group as a postdoctoral fellow in December 2008, working on the synthesis and utilization of novel nanostructures.

Hui Zhang was born in Zhejiang, China. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in materials physics and chemistry from Zhejiang University in 1999 and 2004, respectively. He worked as a faculty in Zhejiang University from 2005 to 2009. In Aug. 2009, he joined the Xia group as a visiting scientist. His research interest focuses on the synthesis and application of noble-metal nanostructures.

Yu Zhang (Shrike) was born and grew up in Nanjing, China. He received his B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Southeast University in 2008. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree in the Xia group, with research interests in the understanding of cell interactions with biomaterials, tissue engineering, cell encapsulation and drug delivery. His hobby is nature-watching especially birding.

Wenju Zhao was born in Huaian, Jiangsu, China. He received his B.S. degree in biomedical engineering from Southeast University in 2008 and then entered the graduate school at the same University. He is a Ph.D. candidate in biomedical engineering and is working in the Xia group on projects related to synthesis and applications of 3-D porous scaffolds, nanoparticles, hydrogels, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Yiqun Zheng was born in Anhui, China. He received his B.S. degree in materials chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2009. He has been working in the Xia group as a Ph. D candidate since January 2010. His research interests include the synthesis of novel metal nanostructures for applications in plasmonics, catalysis, and fuel cell technology.

Dong Qin was born and raised in Shanghai, China.  She spent childhood in the Fudan community where she graduated from Fudan Kindergarten, Primary School, Middle School, and Affiliated High School.  Her academic records include a BS in Chemistry from Fudan University (1990), a Ph.D. in physical chemistry with Professor Hai-Lung Dai from the University of Pennsylvania (1995), a postdoctoral stint with Professor George M. Whitesides at Harvard University (1996-1997), and an MBA from the University of Washington (2003).  Dong is an "honorable" member and webmaster.
