Jingyi Chen received her B.S. from Sun Yat-Sen University in China
(1997), M.A. in biochemistry from SUNY College at Buffalo (2002), and
Ph.D. in chemistry and nanotechnology from the University of
Washington in Seattle (2006). After her postdoctoral stint at
Brookhaven National Laboratory, she took the position of Research Assistant
Professor of Biomedical Engineering in the spring of 2008. Her research interests include synthesis,
surface functionalization, and
characterization of nanomaterials for
applications in biomedicine. |

Lori Williams
was born in Oceanside, California and grew up in St. Louis,
Missouri. She received her B.A. degree in public relations from
Webster University in 2006. In the fall of 2007, she began working
as the Administrative Assistant for the Xia group. |

Christine Moran grew up primarily on the East Coast and is most recently from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Rice University with a B.S. in bioengineering in 2009. She is now pursuing a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering in the Xia group. Her research interests center around the medical applications of metallic nanoparticles and their use in surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS).

Maureen McKiernan was born in Kansas City, Kansas. She received her
B. S. degree in chemistry from Kansas State University in 2008. As a
second year graduate student, she is pursuing her Ph. D. in
chemistry in the Xia group. Her research interests include the
synthesis of novel, metallic nanomaterials and their applications in
biological imaging and cancer therapy. |

Mingshang Jin was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China.
He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Xiamen University in 2006. He
is pursuing his Ph.D. in chemistry at Xiamen University in China. As a
jointly supervised student, he joined Prof. Xia's group in the October of 2009.
His research interests include shape-controlled synthesis of metal nanostructures such as copper, silver, gold,
and nickel, and their applications in areas such as SERS, catalysis, and magnetism. |

Weiyang Li was born in
Tianjin, China. She received her B.S. degree in
chemistry in 2004 and M.S. degree
in inorganic chemistry from the institute of new energy materials
chemistry from Nankai University in 2007. As a second-year graduate
student from BME, she is pursuing her Ph.D. in the Xia group. Her research
interest includes synthesis of nanomaterials for optical sensing and development of new
contrast agents for optical and radio frequency imaging techniques. |

Yunqian Dai
was born in Sichuan, China. She received her B.S. degree in
chemical engineering from Southeast University in 2006. She is pursuing her
Ph.D degree (with Prof. Yueming Sun) in the school of chemistry and chemical
engineering at Southeast University. In the fall of 2008, she joined the
Xia group as a jointly supervised student. Her
research interests include synthesis of arrayed nanostructures and their applications in
dye-sensitized solar cells. |

Claire Cobley was born in Montreal,
Canada and grew up in Cary, North Carolina. She graduated in 2006 from
Brown University where she received a B.S. in
chemistry and an Undergraduate Teaching and Research Award (UTRA). She was
awarded an Early Bird Award to get involved in nanotechnology research
during her first year. As a third-year graduate student in BME, she is
now pursuing her Ph.D. in the Xia group and her research
interests include the synthesis, analysis, and applications of metal
nanostructures. |

Matthew Rycenga was
born in Cadillac, Michigan. He graduated from Hope College with a B.S. in
chemistry in 2006. As a
third-year graduate student in BME, he is
currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree in the Xia group. His scientific interests include
nanoparticle synthesis, self-assembly, surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy
(SERS) and novel biological applications of nanoparticles. |

Yanyun Ma
was born in Shanxi, China and grew up in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia,
China. She received her B. S. degree in chemistry from Xiamen University in
2004. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in chemistry at
Xiamen University in China. As a jointly supervised student, Yanyun joined the
Xia group in the fall of 2008. Her research interests include shape-controlled synthesis and
self-assembly of noble-metal nanostructrues for applications in fields such
as catalysis and energy storage. |

Qiang
Zhang was born in Shanxi province, China. He received his B.S.
in material physics from University of Science and Technology of
China (USTC) in 2005. He is pursuing his Ph. D. degree in USTC with Prof. Longping
Wen in biological materials since 2005. Qiang joined the Xia group as a jointly
supervised Ph. D. student in 2008. His research
interests include biomedical application of nanomaterials with a focus on
cancer therapy through autophagy. |

Jianhua Zhou was born in Guangdong, China. He received his B.S. in polymer science from Sun Yat-Sen University in
China in 2004, M.S. in electrochemistry from Tsinghua University in 2007. He is pursuing his Ph.D. degree in chemistry (with Prof. Hongkai Wu) at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In the fall of 2009, he joined the Xia group as a Fulbright visiting pre-doctorate student. His research interests include microfluidics, biomaterials, and drug delivery. |

Xiaohu Xia was born in Anhui province, China. He graduated from Xiamen University with a B.S. in
biotechnology in 2006. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree with Prof. Qingge Li in
department of biomedical science at Xiamen University. As a jointly supervised Ph. D. student,
he joined the Xia group in October 2009. His research interests include nanomaterial synthesis, surfaced-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and its biological and medical applications. |

Yi-Chun Yeh (Misha) was born and grew up in Yunlin, Taiwan. She received her B.S. degree in Textile Engineering from FengChia University in 2003 and M.S. degree in Materials Engineering from TaTung University in 2006. She is now pursuing her Ph.D. degree in National Tsing Hua University with Prof. Hsing-Wen
Sung, with research interests in tissue engineering and cell vehicle for myocardial infarction.
As a visiting graduate student, she joined the Xia group in October
2009. |

Yu Zhang (Shrike) was born and grew up in Nanjing, China. He received his B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering from Southeast University in 2008. He is now pursuing his Ph.D. degree in the Xia group, with research interests in the understanding of cell interactions with biomaterials, tissue engineering, cell encapsulation and drug delivery. His hobby is nature-watching especially birding. |

Meng-Yi
Bai was
born in Taoyuan, Taiwan. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in
chemistry from National Tsing Hua University (Hsinchu, Taiwan) in 1999 and
2004. After finishing mandatory military service, he
joined the Industrial Technology Research Institution (ITRI) in science
industry park (Hsinchu) as a researcher. He joined the Xia group as a
postdoctoral fellow in the spring of 2008. His research projects focus on the synthesis and utilization of
hollow spheres for biomedical applications. |

Eun Chul Cho was born
in Seoul, South Korea. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from Pohang
University of Science and Technology in 2004, he worked for Amorepacific
Corporation, a cosmetic company, until 2007. He joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral
follow
in the spring of 2008. His
research interests include synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals and
their applications in biomedical research and cosmetics. |

Sung-Wook Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea. He received his M.S.
and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Yonsei University in 2000 and
2004, respectively. His doctoral research focused on synthesis of
biodegradable block copolymers and design of functionalized
nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery system. He worked as
a senior researcher in LG Cable from 2004 to 2006 and as a research
professor at Yonsei from 2006 to 2007. In the spring of 2008, he joined
the Xia group as a postdoctoral fellow working on the development of
biodegradable scaffolds for tissue engineering. |

Jingwei Xie was born in Anhui, China. He received his B.S. (1999), M.S. (2002)
from Nanjing University of Technology in 1999 and Ph.D. from National University of Singapore.
His doctoral
research was focused on the biomedical devices development using electrohydrodynamic atomization.
Jingwei joined the group as a postdoctoral fellow in 2007, working
on the production of nanostructured materials by electrospinning,
with a focus on their biomedical applications such as tissue engineering
and drug delivery. |

Byungkwon
Lim was born in Seoul, South Korea. He received his M.S. and Ph.D.
from school
of chemical and biological engineering at Seoul National University in 2000 and 2004, respectively. His doctoral research was focused on
the development of polymer and carbon nanostructures by using vapor deposition
polymerization. He worked as a senior researcher in
LG Chem from 2004 to 2007. In the spring of 2007, he joined the Xia group
as a postdoctoral fellow working on the synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals for catalytic
and fuel cell applications. |

Jie Zeng was born in Henan, China. He received a BS in Applied Chemistry from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 2002. With Professor Jianguo Hou, he obtained his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from USTC in 2008. His doctoral research was focused on the physical and chemical properties of zero-dimensional nanomaterials. Jie joined
the group as a postdoctoral fellow in December 2008, working on the
synthesis and utilization of novel nanostructures. |

Hui Zhang was born in Zhejiang, China. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in materials physics and chemistry from Zhejiang University in 1999 and 2004, respectively. He worked as a
faculty in Zhejiang University from 2005 to 2009. In Aug. 2009, he joined the Xia group as a visiting scientist. His research interest focuses on the synthesis and application of noble-metal nanostructures. |

Taekyung Yu was born in Seoul, South Korea. He received his Ph.D. from school of chemical and biological engineering at Seoul National University in 2008. His doctoral research was focused on the development of synthetic routes
to metal oxide nanocrystals by using wet-chemical method. In the summer of 2009, he joined the Xia group as a postdoctoral fellow working on the synthesis of metal nanocrystals for catalytic and fuel cell applications. |

Guorong Sun was born in Shanxi, China. He received his B.S. from Beijing Medical University in 1994, M.S. from North Dakota State University in 2004 (Advisor Prof. Mukund P. Sibi), and Ph.D. from Washington University in Saint Louis in 2009 (Advisor Prof. Karen L. Wooley).
He is currently a postdoctoral fellow with research interests that
include the development of stimuli-responsive polymer systems with gold nanostructures for targeted delivery and controlled release. |

Dong Qin was
born and raised in Shanghai, China.
Her
academic records include a Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry with
Professor Hai-Lung Dai from the University of Pennsylvania (1995), a
postdoctoral stint with Professor George M. Whitesides at Harvard
University (1996-1997), and an MBA degree from the University of
Washington (2003). Dong is an "honorable" member and webmaster
of the
Xia group. |
